Who should I contact at BauTech, Inc.?
BauTech, Inc. is a California corporation which holds the license to
manufacture and sell the BauGrid® Reinforcement Systems.
The BauGrid® Reinforcement System is the invention of Hanns U. Baumann, S.E.
which has been in development since 1987. The generic name for BauGrids® is
"Welded Reinforcement Grids (WRG)".
ICBO ER-5192: GENERAL APPROVAL
"BauGrid® Reinforcement is used to confine boundary
element reinforcement bars in concrete and masonry shearwalls and reinforcement
bars in concrete and masonry columns and beams of frames." Click

Yes. The BauGrid® Reinforcement System is protected by U.S., Japanese and
European Union patents.
Upon the advice of BauTech’s patent attorney, a unique trademark name for
each of BauTech’s proprietary products was conceived. In German, the "Bau"
means "to build," as in Baumann which means " man who
Yes. The development and testing of the BauGrid® system has been ongoing
since 1987 when testing began at UC Irvine by Professor Robin Shepherd.
The BauGrid® system has been used as transverse reinforcement in concrete shearwalls up to 17 stories in height after first being tested at
the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) by
Prof. Vitelmo Bertero.
The BauGrid® system is being tested at UC San Diego in a five-story
structure, under the direction of Prof. M. J. Nigel Priestley. Testing at the
University of Washington under Prof. John Stanton will determine its use in a
$180 million, 39 story San Francisco apartment structure presently under
design by Robert Englekirk, S.E. for Pankow Builders.
In all of the testing to date, the BauGrid® system has been shown to give
superior structural performance compared to structural members reinforced with
conventional transverse reinforcement.
At the University of Ottawa, Prof. Murat Saatcioglu’s research has shown
that the BauGrid® system appears to improve performance by confining the
concrete in each individual cell. Excellent ductile performance of concrete
columns having just four longitudinal (corner) bars confined by 9-cell
BauGrids® opens the possibility of even greater reduction of congestion in
joints of ductile concrete members reinforced with BauGrids®. His research
has also shown that high strength BauGrid® transverse reinforcement in high
performance concrete (15,000 psi) members reduces congestion while providing
excellent ductile performance.

Recently ACI 439 Reinforcing Steel Committee has formed a subcommittee ACI
439G-Welded Reinforcement Grids chaired by Hanns U. Baumann, S.E..
In your local area through BauTech's manufacturing licensees.
Automatic resistance welding.
A strict quality assurance program is in place in compliance with ICBO and
ASTM quality control manuals.
The ductility test measures the ductility of the BauGrid®. A minimum of 4%
elongation measured across the diagonal dimension is required to pass the test.
Yes. It will be included in the pending ASTM standard for Welded
